What is Carnival like in the Mexican Caribbean?
Carnival in the Mexican Caribbean has its roots in Indigenous and African traditions, fused with a Spanish influence. The festival has become an integral part of the Caribbean culture and is considered one of the most important festivities of the region.
It is known for its lively parades, streets filled with live music, people dressed up in colorful costumes and dance & music competitions.
Where do the celebrations take place?
Carnival is celebrated in many of Mexico’s coastal cities, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. Each city has its own unique version of the festival, with different traditions and customs.
Cancun
Cancun, one of Mexico’s most renowned tourist destinations, is also a popular place to celebrate Carnival. With a lively nightlife scene, beach parties and colorful parades, it’s definitely an excellent place to visit during this festivity.
The traditional celebration will be held until February 21st, from Chichen Itza Avenue and Tulum Avenue, towards the Plaza de la Reforma, which will host multiple carnival activities.

Playa del Carmen
The city fills with music, dancing, costumes and celebrations from February 14th until 21st. Carnival parades are one of the most popular attractions, with “comparsas” and floats parading through the streets, while live music is played and people are dancing in colorful costumes.
Among the musical artists invited to the epicenter of the celebration (Plaza 28 de Julio), you can enjoy Los Ángeles Azules, Mario Bautista, DJ Victoria Volkova and more!

Cozumel
This tropical island of the Mexican Caribbean, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, is also filled with live music, dancing, and costume competitions during Carnival season.
The most iconic party on the beautiful ‘Island of Swallows’ will take place until February 22nd. And best of all, it will have a luxurious guest list! Among the artists that will be present, you will be able to enjoy the incredible music of the Sonora Santanera, the talented María León, and you will also have the opportunity to see one of the most popular reggaeton duos: Wisin y Yandel!

Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is ready to welcome everyone who wants to enjoy its traditional ‘Soy Caribe’ party! This year, the celebrations will take place from February 4th through February 21st, making it one of the longest parties in all of Quintana Roo.
