How to Celebrate Día de Muertos in Mexico 💀

This colorful celebration has spread worldwide and almost everybody knows what Día de Muertos means but… do they know how to celebrate it?

Día de Muertos is not only about remembering the deceased, but also sharing with them. Their spirits are especially present during these celebrations. Love and respect are the protagonists and everyone is welcome to join.

1) Join public and local events or rituals

Do a quick search in the area you’re staying at, and we’re sure you’ll find some very interesting events to attend. Public parades and gatherings are usually free and open to everyone. Music, dancing, “calaveritas” and “catrina” costumes will hypnotize you! Here’s an itinerary of Playa’s public activities for you to check out!

The most iconic event in the Riviera Maya is the “Life and Death Festival” at Xcaret Park. For four entire days (from October 30th to November 2nd) many activities will take place showing the gastronomy, customs and traditions of the Mexican Day of the Dead culture. You can get tickets to enjoy their magical shows and activities through our new All-Inclusive platform.

2) Shop for “Día de Muertos” decorations and traditional costumes

This is not a morbid tradition, it’s a celebration everyone can join.  We would like to encourage you to add a typical festive touch to your clothes, prepare a traditional meal and decorate your rental home according to the festivity.

Get your skeleton costume and/or your face artfully painted as a traditional Catrina (picturesque and beautiful skeleton women with big hats or flowers on the hair). Some artists will offer to do your make-up on the streets or beauty salons that day, but you can also do it yourself at home with an online tutorial.

Everyone should celebrate Día de Muertos, especially if you’re in Mexico during these dates. Don’t forget you can order ANYTHING through our website, from flowers and make-up, to traditional decoration for your rental home: The sky’s the limit! 🌠

3) Taste the festive food

Sugar skulls and “pan del muerto” are the traditional treats on these dates. We usually use them for the altars, but it is allowed to eat them too of course! Some families even get together to bake and decorate their own pastries ✨

Give it a try, you can order any of the traditional dishes through our website!

4) Honor your deceased loved ones

Don’t only join other people’s celebrations, but use this occasion to honor your own friends and family members who passed away. You can light a candle, make an offering or even create an altar! You just need a small table, flowers, pan de muerto and/or sugar skulls, fruits, photos of the deceased and the favorite dish of those you want to celebrate 🕯️ Voilá, now you have your own altar for the Día de Muertos!

5) Host a meal and show kindness to other people

This celebration is not only about the deceased, but also about being kind and sharing with the ones still alive. It’s a special occasion to be grateful, and what better way to show it than by sharing an exquisite meal together? You don’t even have to cook if you don’t feel like it; your job is to celebrate, so hire a private chef and let him/her handle your meal! They can prepare anything you’d like!

6) Visit a cemetery

Many families make a trip to the cemetery to demonstrate their love. It is common to take flowers, sugar skulls and the favorite food of the loved ones to decorate their graves. If you are friends with a local family you can ask them about this tradition and maybe even be invited to join them.

No matter where you are right now, you’re formally invited to join the celebration! 💀
